Insurance errors

Never let anyone guess an insurance ID

A wrong ID creates the same problem one more time, plus a new one.

The most damaging thing an agent can do on a billing dispute is invent a member ID. A wrong ID means a second failed claim, a second denial, and a second layer of confusion.

In our case the correct plan ID for a rebill was not something anyone could guess. It came from the doctor's office that had ordered the tests, in writing, the next day.

Where to get a real ID

  1. Your insurance card, for the plan active on the date of service.
  2. Your insurer's member portal or member services line.
  3. The ordering or referring office. They often have the right plan on file.
  4. Your employer or benefits administrator, for a self-funded plan.

The rule for agents

Never invent a member ID, SSN, reference number, address, or date. If it is not in the case file, write “unknown” and ask the patient.

This rule is not theoretical caution. A fabricated detail, stated confidently to a billing office, can wreck your credibility for the rest of the dispute in a single sentence.

Not legal, medical, tax, or financial advice. This is one patient's experience plus general information. Rules differ by state and by plan, and they change. Check your own documents and official sources, and decide for yourself whether to pay any bill.
